This department has received a project on “Special Manpower Development Programme for VLSI Design & related software (SMDP-II) for a period of 5 years from the Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Govt.of India , New Delhi . It is an important and prestigeous project through which quality manpower in the area of VLSI Design and related software is planned to be created.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE ORGANIZED BY THE DEPARTMENT

NATIONAL CONFERENCE on “Design Techniques for Modern Electronic Devices, VLSI & Communication Systems DTVC-2007” was organized successfully by E&CED, on 14-15 May 2007and received over-whelming response from all states of India. The conference was well attended by twelve world renowned academician experts and 110 delegates from all over the country. Dr.R.L. Chauhan Chairman BOG of NIT Hamirpur was the chief guest. Dr. C.P. Ravikumar Senior Director Texas Instruments Lmt. Bangalore was key-note speaker. Prof. I.K. Bhat Director NIT Hamirpur, Prof. GS Visweswaran IIT Delhi, Prof. Dinesh Sharma IIT Bombay, Prof. D. Mukhopadhaya from Jadavpur University, Prof. S. Sarkar MITS Sikar Rajasthan (formerly at IIT Roorkee), Prof. A.K. Saxena IIT Roorkee, Prof. Ajay Sharma  NIT Jalandhar, Dr. S.S. Rajput Sc-E NPL India New Delhi & Prof IITM Gwalior, were main experts of the Conference. 55 Research Papers were presented in the Conference along with special Tutorials. Dr. Rajeevan Chandel Head E&CED NIT Hamirpur was the General Chair & Coordinator of the National Conference. Dr. Ashwani Kumar Chandel AP EED NIT Hamirpur was the organizing secretary of the event. Sh. Surender Soni, Sh  Ashok Kumar, Mrs. Gargi Khanna, Mrs. Meenakshi Sood along with other faculty & lab staff were in organizing team. The main objective of the National Conference was to bring the industrial professionals and academicians together for a better appreciation of the challenges in the Design techniques in the emerging areas of very large scale integration (VLSI) and Communications systems. Apart from new research areas in which further research work needs to be carried out were identified.

 SHORT TERM COURSES ORGANIZED BY THE DEPARTMENT

·         The department has organized a short-term course on “Recent Trends in Digital Electronics”, during Oct. 9-14, 1995 for the benefit of working Engineers and teachers working in institutions in H.P.

·         The department has organized a National Seminar on “Recent Trends in Communication” RTC-97 during February 6-7, 1998 for the  benefit of working Engineers and teachers working in institutions.

·         Short terms training course on “Repair & Maintenance of Electronic Gadgets” organized during 20 to 24 March, 2006 under Community Services Programme of TEQIP in which 28 participants from nearby places took training.

·         Short term course cum training program on "VLSI Design and Optimization Techniques VDOT-2006", was conducted from June 05-09,2006    by department of  E&CE under summer/winter school TEQIP. The course provided an exposure in the emerging field of  VLSI and application of Modern Optimization Techniques, to 34 participants who had come from different technical/Govt. institutes and industry spread all over India. A penal discussion on ‘VLSI Education in India’ was also conducted. Prof. I.K. Bhat chaired the penal.

• A workshop on “Operation & Application of Electronic Test & Measuring Instruments (ETMI-06)” under Community Service Programme of TEQIP  was organized on 01 and 02 November, 2006 by Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, NIT Hamirpur (HP). 38 persons from local areas participated in the same.

• Short Term Course cum Training Programme on VLSI Design & Recent Trends in Nano-Electronics (VDNE 2006) (Winter School, TEQIP)was conducted from December 18-22, 2006 by E&CED, NIT Hamirpur HP. Dr. Rajeevan Chandel and Sh Ashwani Rana were the Coordinators. 50 candidates participated and benefited from the same. Prof. R.P. Agarwal VC-BU Jhansi & Professor E&CED IIT Roorkee Dr. S.S. Rajput Scientist-F NPL India, Dr. S. Dasgupta E&CED IIT Roorkee along with NIT Hamirpur faculty delivered expert lectures. Prof. I.K. Bhat Director NIT Hamirpur,  chaired the Panel Discussion on VLSI & Nano-Electronics Education in India.

• B.Tech. Curriculum workshop of E& CED was conducted on 10^th Feb., 2007. The B.Tech. syllabus was revised and update

BEAM Robotics workshop was conducted on 24^th and 25^th March, 2007 under SPEC E&CED NIT, Hamirpur (HP). 78 students participated and Dr. G. Venkatesh from DoCel Bangalore was the expert.

• A Short Term Training Programme on “HDL & VLSI EDA Tools” for students of various branches of NIT Hamirpur and students of other NITs was conducted on 21-22, May 2007 under TEQIP & SMDP-II. Thirty students learnt about EDA Tolls & HDL in the STTP.The coordinators were Dr. Rajeevan Chandel & Er. Philemon Daniel.

• A Short term Course on “Repair & Maintenance of Electronic & Electrical Gadgets”, organized from June 11-15, 2007 under UPA Program of Govt. of India. Forty four participants benefited from the course. Course Coordinators were Dr. Rajeevan Chandel &Sh. Surender Soni

·         A Short term Training Programme (STTP) on “VLSI Design & Tools-VLSI-07” under NIT Hamirpur Seminars & SMDP-II Project organized by E&CED, NIT Hamirpur HP, for 5 Days from Dec 4-8, 2007. 30 participants faculty and students of NIT Hamirpur were trained in using SPICE and VLSI EDA Tools. Dr. Rajeevan Chandel AP & Head E&CED & Er Philemon Daniel, VLSI Faculty were the coordinators of the training programme. The 5 days Short Term Training Programme on VLSI Design & Tools being conducted by Electronics & Commu. Engg Dept. of NIT Hamirpur and was INAUGURATED on Dec 4th, 2007 by Prof IK Bhat, Director NIT Hamirpur. He appreciated the efforts of the Department and suggested that such intensive course could be designed as a 1 or 2 Credit Course so that participants attending it get an added advantage.

                 The participants were trained in various design aspects in the emerging area of electronics circuits i.e. VLSI and software usage.  Course coordinators Dr. Rajeevan Chandel HOD E&CED & Er P Daniel, Lect E&CED, are sincerely thankful to Worthy Director for sponsoring the event from Institute funds and to MCIT Govt of India for providing the Softwares in VLSI under SMDP-II Project in which the saidtraining is being imparted. Dr. Rajeevan Chandel took the inaugural Technical session and gave detailed over view of Electronic devices and SPICE software used for designing the electronic circuits. Er. Philemon Daniel delivered two lectures, Mrs. Gargi Khanna , Mrs. K Dutta, Er Pankaj Kamboj, Er Gurvinder Singh and Er. P. Singh delivered an expert lecture each in the STTP. Extensive lab sessions were conducted daily.

·         One week STC on “Safe Use & Maintenance of Electronics & Electrical Gadgets” under UPA Grant of MUD was conducted by E&CED, NIT Hamirpur HP  from 7-11 April 2008. Coordinators: Dr. Rajeevan Chandel, Er. SK Soni.

·        Dr. Rajeevan Chandel conducted a Workshop on ICT for Personality Development under 50^th  STC under Community Service Programme on 5^th May, 2008.

 ·      An Electronics Workshop was organized by Electronics & communication Department on 13^th May, 2008 under 50^th  STC under Community Service Programme. 92 Participants attended the same. Coordinators were: Dr. Rajeevan Chandel, Er. Gargi Khanna, Er.  Meenakshi Sood.

·         National Workshop on VCS-08 Conducted on “VLSI & Communication Systems” was organized by Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, NIT Hamirpur, on 5^th and 6^th June 2008.  The course was highly beneficial to over 50 participants of various Technical Institutes & other organizations from Punjab, Haryana and different places of Himachal Pradesh who registered for the National Workshop. The technical session commenced with the expert Lecture of Dr. Rajeevan Chandel on Communication fundamentals, followed by the expert talk on Satellite Communication by Er. Gargi and Wi-Fi installation by Er. Ashok Kumar. Prof. Vinod Kapoor delivered expert lecture on Optical Fiber Communication, Dr. Rajeevan Chandel on VLSI Fundamentals and  Er Krishan talked on Mobile communication. Er. Ramesh Kumar of Texas Instruments Bangalore was the main expert in VLSI and delivered expert lectures on DFT & SOC VLSI Design. Coordinators were Dr. Rajeevan Chandel, Er. Gargi Khanna and Er Krishan Kumar.

Programme Conducted

• Induction Training programme ITP-07 was organized on 24 Sep 2007 by Dr. Ashwani Chandel, Dr. Rajesh Sharma & Dr. R. Chandel,in E&CE Department for 40 newly recruited faculty members of NIT Hamirpur HP. Prof IK Bhat Director NIT Hamirpur, Prof Anoop Kumar, Prof. Susheel Chauhan, Prof. Vinod Kapoor, Dr. Piar Chand, Dr. Ashwani Chandel and Dr. Rajeevan Chandel were the experts for ITP-07.

• Short Term Course on “Use of Multimedia and Electronic Equipments, MMED07” under TEQIP Services to Community was organized by E&CED, NIT Hamirpur HP for 1 Week from 27 Sep 07 to 1 Oct 2007. Forty-two participants from the Office of SDM, SP, DFO, CMO, HPSEB, and faculty from Polytechnic, GDC Hamirpur etc. attended and benefited from the STC. Dr. Rajeevan Chandel, Er Gargi Khanna & Er. Meenakshi Sood were the Coordinators of the course.

AICTE Summer Schools Conducted

Summer School on “Application of MATLAB, OrCAD/ SPICE Simulation tools in Engineering (MOS-2008)”

Two weeks Summer School on “Application of MATLAB, OrCAD/ SPICE Simulation tools in Engineering (MOS-2008)”, was inaugurated by Prof. IK Bhat, Director NIT Hamirpur HP. The course was sponsored by MHRD/AICTE and being organized by Electrical Engineering and E&CE Departments of NIT Hamirpur HP. The summer school was held from 30^th June- 11^th July, 2008. The main purpose to conduct this course was to make the faculty members of various engineering institutes aware about the most widely used softwares by the industry and academics.  MATLAB is an interactive system whose basic data element is an array that does not require dimensioning. It allows the user to solve many technical computing problems, especially those with matrix and vector formulations. Participants shall also be exposed to OrCAD SPICE, LABVIEW, PSIM and DSPACE.  The technical sessions on MATLAB were conducted by Dr. Ashwani Kumar Chandel, Coordinator of MOS-2008 and Er. Venkatesulu from Cranes Software Bangalore.

Introduction to MATLAB Software and its use for optimization problems was taught to the participants. Minimization and Maximization of objective functions was discussed. Thereafter graphical representation of data in 2D & 3D plots was taught to them by Dr. Ashwani Chandel, Coordinator of the Course. Opimizaiton for engineering applications was taken up by Prof. Ram Naresh Sharma, HOD EED. Prof. YR Sood delivered on GA & EP. Dr. Rajeevan Chandel HOD E&CE and Coordinator MOS-08 took expert lectures in SPICE software, which is a versatile circuit simulator. She delivered on MOSFET fundamentals and thereafter on Physical design of VLSI integrated circuits. She conducted various lab sessions on SPICE and Tanner EDA tools. Experts from Tech Labs, Vi Micro delivered lectures and took lab demonstrations. The participants showed enthusiastic zeal to learn maximum from the experts. There was an overwhelming response for the course. 55 participants from all over India attended the course with full involvement. Dr. Ashwani Kumar Chandel, Dr. Rajeevan Chandel and Dr. R.K. Jarial were the Coordinators of the summer school MOS-08.

Summer School on Design Techniques for VLSI & Nanotechnology (DTV-08) 

Department of Electronics & Comm. Engineering of NIT Hamirpur organized a AICTE/ MHRD Sponsored two weeks Advanced Summer School on “Design Techniques for VLSI & Nanotechnology, DTV-2008” w.e.f. 12-07-2008 to 21-07-2008. 47 participants faculty of Technical & Engg. Institutes of the country attended the course. An overwhelming response was received for the course. The participants were exposed to the advanced and emerging areas of VLSI Design & Nanotechnology. Various electronic design automation (EDA) tools viz. TANNER, OrCAD, MATLAB, Xilinx, FPGA were demonstrated  and hands-on-training was given to the participants. Prof. IK Bhat, Director NIT Hamirpur, Prof. AK Saxena from IIT Roorkee, Prof. SS Rajput from NPL India & IIITM Gwalior, Dr. BK Kaushik from GB Pant Institute & IIT Roorkee, Er. Raghav from IMS Gurgaon, Mr. Bharat Manocha & Er. Manoj from Powai Labs, Dr. Rajeevan Chandel, Dr. Ashwani Chandel, Er. Gargi Khanna and faculty from E&CED NIT Hamirpur were the resource persons for the summer school. The coordinators of the Summer School were Dr. Rajeevan Chandel,  Dr. Ashwani  Kumar Chandel and  Er. Gargi Khanna. Er. Gagnesh was  co-coordinator.

In both the AICTE sponsored Summer Schools MOS-08 & DTV-08 held in June-July 2008, the  faculty upgraded their  technical knowledge & skills. The teaching fraternity benefited immensely from the expertise of the various renowned academicians from IITs & Industry who were the resource persons.

 Short term course on Working & Applications of Electronic Systems (WAES’08) was organized by Electronics & Communication Engg Dept NIT Hamirpur from 4- 8 Nov 2008. Prof. I.K. Bhat, Director, NIT Hamirpur HP was the Chief guest. Prof RL Sharma Coordinator TEQIP  and Sh Sanjay Sood DFO Hamirpur were the guests-of-honour. Prof. Bhat appreciated the efforts of the E&CE department in organizing a course on electronic systems for upgrading the technical skills of people of the neighboring community. Head of the Electronics Dept Dr. Rajeevan Chandel felt that the course has enabled the participants to understand working and applications of important electronic devices and systems namely radio, television, mobile, domestic gadgets, digital and data communication. Emphasis has been laid on latest trends in Electronic Communication systems as these are the gadgets of daily use today. Serving the society has been and shall be the endeavor of E&CED in future as well. Prof. AS Singha, Sh. PK Sood, Dr. Lalit Awasthi, Dr. Ashwani Chandel, Sh. UK Pandey along with faculty & staff of E&CED were present in the closing function. Sixty-one participants benefited from the course. The lab sessions were held daily in the afternoon on use of electronic measuring equipments, design & testing of electronic circuits, digital design, analog & digital communication, household wiring, repair of electrical gadgets and working of HDTV. Participants in their feedback expressed full satisfaction with the content and conduction of the course.

 The course was conducted under Services to Community programme of TEQIP from 4^th to 8^th Nov. 2008, for faculty, staff and students  of various polytechnics, and vocational schools near Hamirpur.  61 participants benefited from the course. Short Term Course STC e-COM’09

Department of Electronics & Communication Engg. conducted a one week Short Term Course on e-Communication & Its Applications (e-COM’09) from 24th -28th February, 2009 under service to community of TEQIP for faculty, students of technical institutes and unemployed youth. Thirty-five participants benefited from the course

Prof. RL Sharma Coor. TEQIP and Prof. Saroj Rangnekar, Head Energy Center MANIT Bhopal were the chief guests of the STC. Prof AS Singha Dean P&D cum Registrar and Prof. ND Pandey from NIT Allahabad were guests of honour. Prof. LK Awasthi, Prof. Vinod Kapoor, faculty, staff of the NIT Hamirpur were also present.

Prof. S. Rangnekar addressed the gathering and highly appreciated the initiative of E&CED of NIT Hamirpur in conducting a course on e-communication. This is the need of the modern era she said for the upliftment of the community. Prof. AS Singha Registrar, appreciated the efforts of the E&CED to have undertaken lots of activities for the faculty of various institutes in the country, community and students over last three years. Dr. Rajeevan Chandel Head Electronics Dept, expressed her thanks to the authorities to facilitate the dept to contribute significantly in a positive direction to the society.  She briefed that the present course shall enable the participants to understand working and applications of important electronic communication techniques and system Dr SS Katoch, Dr RK Dutta, Dr. Ashwani Chandel, Dr. Kamlesh Dutta, faculty, staff, guests and participants were also present.

Workshop on Robotics, E&CE

Two days workshop on Robotics namely iRoboTricks-08 was inaugurated in Electronics & Communication Engg. Department of NIT Hamirpur HP on 18th October 2008. Prof. J.N. Sharma, Dean Academics was the Chief Guest of the day. He elaborated about the advancements in the field of Science, technology & Robotics in the modern era. He encouraged the students to actively participate in such activities of the E&CED in future as well. Dr. Rajeevan Chandel, Head of Electronics & Communication Engg. Department and Chairperson of SPEC welcomed the guests & the participants. Dr. Chandel motivated all the students to actively participate in such courses and technical events to groom their technical skills and learn team spirit as these help in personality development of the students in the long run. Prof. AS Singha Dean P&D, Dr. Ashwani Chandel and Dr. Veena Sharma along with students, the entire SPEC-team and 144 students participants were present in the inaugural session. 

The workshop expert Er. Pradeep Sharma & Er. Rashmi from RoboSapiens, Kanpur were the main experts of the workshop, which was conducted in Kailash boys hostel recreation hall. An insight and tricks about the design of the intelligent Robots was given to the students in this workshop. The students of various departments of  NIT Hamirpur designed two Robots viz. i)Snooker Playing Robot and ii) Line Follower Robot.

The programme was organized by E&CED NIT Hamirpur under Society for Promotion of Electronic Culture (SPEC), and was sponsored by TEQIP. All the 36 teams (144 students) could achieve 100% success by building working robots. The working Robots were demonstrated to faculty and students on 21st Oct. 2008 in the seminar hall of E&CED. Prof. RL Sharma, Coordinator TEQIP was the Chief guest and Sh A.L. Sharma, Registrar NIT Hamirpur was the guest of Honour. Prof. RK Sharma, Prof. LK Awasthi, Dr. Vinod Kapoor, Dr. Piar Chand, Dr. Rajeevan Chandel, Dr. Subhash, Er. Gagnesh OIC SPEC, Er. Vinod Sharma, Er. Meenakshi Sood and students viewed the lively demonstrations. The students were applauded for the commendable efforts and initiative in the field of Robotics. Achiranshu Garg, Nitin Vyas, Aditi, Saroj, Mohit, Arun, ND Ramesh, Devesh, Gaurav, Pyush, Rajeev Ranjan, Karan, Saurav, Prabhat and all other SPEC members and participants were present.

Workshop on Advances in Optical Fiber & Wireless Communication 

Two days workshop on Advances in Optical Fiber & Wireless Communication AOWC-08 was conducted by E&CED under TEQIP on 5-6 Dec 2008 for faculty & students of technical institutes. SPEC Fest-2008 E&CED NIT Hamirpur

E&CED organized SPEC Fest-2008 from 22-24 Feb 2008 a three day First intra-department technical festival of NIT Hamirpur. The inauguration was held with  the lighting of  the lamp on 22 Feb 2008 by veteran Dr. J.N. Sharma (Dean, Academics NIT Hamirpur) , Dr. Rajeevan Chandel (HOD, E&CE, NIT Hamirpur),  Dr. Anoop HOD MED and Mr. Gagnesh (OIC, SPEC) along with faculty of E&CED and other departments. The fest was a joint venture of SPEC (Society  for Promotion of  Electronic Culture) and Electronics and Communication Department, NIT Hamirpur.  The technical fest kicked off with the opening event-  the enthralling "Quiz- arena". The fest was sparked with numerous enticing and competitive workshops and events viz. Photoshop contest, Circuit Design  Contest, PCB making were held on 23 Feb 08. The technical paper contest was chaired by Dr. Rajeevan Chandel HOD E&CED on 24th Feb 2008. The  triumphant teams walked away with fabulous prizes.

           SPEC, attempted to illuminate the cognizance and carve out the personality of the students and mightily succeeded in doing so, with Public Speaking and Group Discussion with resource person Mr. Saurabh Jaiswal of TIME group  Chandigarh on the concluding day. Students of all departments of NIT Hamirpur participated in the technical festival with much enthusiasm.

• Er. Pradeep Kumar Subudhi and Er. Manabesh Ray 2008 graduates of E&CE Dept. NIT Hamirpur who worked under the guidance of Dr. Rajeevan Chandel Assist. Prof. & Head E&CE Dept. for their Projects, qualified in the Regional Category of prestigious Agilent AETA-2008 Awards. They were amongst the top 8 selected teams out of 40 teams from all over the country. Their work and presentation on “Face recognition using Gabor wavelets”, was well appreciated by the National Jury on 10^th July 2008 at IIT Delhi in the final round of the National AETA-08 award.

• Er. Kumar Ashutosh, B.Tech. Final Year ECE student  of this Institute awarded “Best Students Award” for the year 2006-2007.

Students’ Activities and Other Academic Pursuits

• The department has contributed significantly in the field of Electronics and Communication Engineering. High placement of E&CE students very consistently every year speaks volumes of the same and has been instrumental in making NIT Hamirpur a prestigious Institute all over the country and abroad. We take pride that our alumni are doing extremely well in the important organizations viz. DRDO, WIPRO, PATNI, INFOSYS, BSNL, VSNL, TI, BEL, Crompton Greaves, Samtel, TCS, Satyam Computer, Army / Air Force and many others, thereby helping make NIT Hamirpur a Brand Name.

• Active involvement of E&CE students Mr. Kumar Aditya, Mr. Ashok, Mr. Mudit, Mr. Rasik Banta, Mr. Tarun and Mr. Sunil (EED) as participants and volunteers in short term course cum training programme VDOT-2006, at E&CE Department, NIT Hamirpur HP. The contribution of Mr. Kumar Aditya E&CE in preparing the VDOT-06 proceedings CD is commendable.

• ECE students Mr. Arjun Shankar and Mr. Kumar Ashutosh represented NIT Hamirpur at Techfest’06 at IIT Bombay’s Annual Technical Festival, 2006.
• Best paper awarded to Mr. Kumar Vijay Mishra & Mr. Nishant Sephehia in NIMBUS, NIT Hamirpur.

• 42 students of 3rd year Electronics & Communication Engineering Department have undergone Industrial visit to Indian Institute of Science, BEL, CDOT & TI  at  Bangalore.

• Er. Kumar Vijay Mishra Scientist–C, DRDO, Bangalore, an Alumni of E&CED NIT Hamirpur (2003), was awarded 'Scientist of the Year' Award in LRDE (Cash prize + appreciation certificate) on December 19th 2006.
• A counseling session Placement Chakra was conducted by the final year TPR's, on 3^rd  September, 2006 in which nearly 75 students from 3rd year and some other from 1st and 2nd year participated. The session was meant for the guidance of students, so as to provide them a clear vision of their choices and interests according to which they can frame their preference order for the recruiters.
• 65 students from all the branches (maximum from electronics) visited  the radio station in Anu. Students came to know about various equipments and  techniques used for radio transmission.
• Six students of E&CED participated in Inter Engineering Deemed University Basketball Tournament at TIET, Patiala held  from 15/02/2007 to 18/02/2007.
• Four students of E&CED participated in Campus Rock idols 07 an open National level rock contest being organized by DNA Networks at Chandigarh on 3^rd Feb., 2007
• A quiz comprising some basic electronics questions was conducted for the  first year students. Two winners were declared.
• A grand workshop BEAM ROBOTICS was conducted by Dr. G. Venkatesh from Bangalore on 24th-25th march, 2007. 38 teams (two participants in each team) participated in the workshop, in which they worked enthusiastically and exhaustively and finally made 2 robots. The workshop gave a birth to the robotics culture at NIT Hamirpur.
• The only one of its kinds, a soldering workshop was held on 22nd February 2007 in which students were taught soldering skills, which are, must for a student of Electronics stream. Nearly 40 students participated in the workshop

1.  M.Tech Degree Programme in VLSI Design Automation & Techniques has been started at NIT Hamirpur HP since July 2006, with a full intake of 18 students.

2. One candidate Ms. Gargi Khanna is registered for Ph.D. in VLSI Design area under Dr. Rajeevan Chandel and Dr. Ashwani Kumar.

3. A subject ECE-413 VLSI Design Techniques is introduced and being taught to B.Tech. E&CED Final Year (8th Semester), from January 2006.

4. A subject ECE-411 VLSI Design Techniques and also a LAB on VLSI Design Automation for B.Tech. E&CED Final Year (7th Semester) is now included in the revised scheme and syllabus of B.Tech. E&CE.
