Freshers Quiz
SPEC began its activities for the year08 with an entertaining yet knowledgeable quiz comprising of questions on general science. It was attended by 300 students of 1st year and each one enjoyed with its full sway into the core. It was also a chance for SPEC to showcase their past activities to the students and unveil loads of upcoming events to the newcomers of the institution.
Workshop On Soldering Techniques & Demonstration of a Beetle Bot
A workshop on soldering and robotics was held on 22nd August, 08 in the T.V. Lab of E&CE Department. The students of first year had heard about soldering, knew what the material of a solder wire is, but didn't have any practical idea about it. But those who attended the workshop gained an edge over others as they not only have the theoretical knowledge, but also know exactly what it is to "solder an I.C." or any other component on a PCB. The workshop provided a platform to the students where they were free to raise the questions and get their doubts clear.
It was followed by a demonstration of a Robot “Beetle Bot" which was created from scratch was also appreciated very much. It's all about making your own robot at a minimal cost from daily waste.
Workshop on Familiarization to Basic Electronic Components
Gearing up very fast for this semester, SPEC organized a workshop based on the familiarization of the basic electronic components for the student of first year. The workshop was on 19th August, 08 held in the T.V. Lab of E& CE department. The main idea behind the workshop was to make our budding engineers aware of those tiny components which they will be using throughout their life. The first session started with a lecture by faculty member Er. Vinod Kumar, not only ignited the young minds but also enhanced their interest towards electronics.
Further the practical demonstration of each component, ranging from resistor to transformers and transistors was an advantage for those who were present there. Students seemed eager to learn more which was clear from the large crowd which gathered there. The workshop helped students a lot in gaining practical knowledge and removing various doubts about the electronic components.
Digital Storage Oscilloscope Workshop
A workshop on Digital Storage Oscilloscope was organized to make students aware of the latest equipment procured by the Electronics and Communication Department. The use of DSO was explained to the 1st and 2nd year students and all the doubts of the students were solved simultaneously. DSO uses the latest technology to study the type of input signal given to it and can be used to study more than two signals simultaneously. Also all the parameters of the input signal can be found out with the press of a button.
Seminars
To make learning more interesting, SPEC tried to initiate a new culture in the institution wherein students of 3rd year were given a chance to present a seminar to the bright minds of 1st year. The topics were chosen so as to attract the students as they were being put to use in our daily life but still most of us hadn’t a clue about its working. The topics were Microcontrollers, Motors, Artificial Intelligence and C Language. The idea was well accepted as was evident by the large turnout for all the seminars.
i-Robotricks Workshop
In collaboration with Robosapiens India, a 2 day workshop on robotics was conducted in which 144 students from 1st and 2nd year took part. The students learnt the technique of making a simple mechanical soccer playing robot as well as a fully automated line follower. The event was a grand success considering that the success rate for the workshop was 100% (a first for NIT Hamirpur) i.e. all the robots were not only working but were able to perform all the specified tasks at the end of workshop.
STTP on “Fundamentals of HDL-Verilog and P-SPICE”
In association with SMDP-II, a 2 month course was organized in which 25 students of ECE and EEE were given expert lectures by Dr. Rajeevan Chandel and Mr P.Daniel. Students learned the use of Verilog and P-Spice to simulate and design high level digital designs. It consisted of lectures as well as practical sessions in the ECED labs.
Workshop On Circuit Maker Software
A detailed demo on the use of Circuit maker was given to the students of 1st and 2nd year which would enable them to simulate low level analog and digital circuits on computers before they can actually assemble it on a PCB. It gave them an introduction to the wide range of CAD sofwares which are now an inevitable part of any engineering trade.
Workshop on Introduction to PSoC
A one day workshop on PSoC (Programmable System on Chip) was conducted by CYPRESS SEMICONDUCTORS, Bangalore in collaboration with ECED, NIT Hamirpur. Dr.R.L.Sharma, the Chief Guest along with Dr.J.N.Sharma, Dr.Rajeevan Chandel welcomed Er. Sachin Gupta, Applications Engineer at Cypress.
Er. Sachin gave a basic introduction to PSoC. Around 65 students from 2nd, 3rd and final year of B.Tech & M.Tech, E&CE attended the introductory session during the first half of the day.
The second half marked the beginning of the hands-on-session where 7 teams of 5 students each were given a chance to work on a P-SoC and programme it. Dr.Rajeevan Chandel & Er.Gargi Khanna were also present during the hands-on-session. In this session students got to know about Chip level & System level designing of PsoC and also learnt working of Capactive Sensing using the Cypress CY3209 kits.
Robowars
To put into use the robots made by students during i-Robotricks and to generate interest among students about Robotmaking, Robowars was organized which allowed them to use their robots to complete the specified tasks. The event saw participants struggling to keep their robots within the arena and complete task in least possible time.
Adobe Photoshop
An event on adobe photoshop was organized to familiarize the students with the basics of photoshop. Many students turned up for this event who cherished the beauty of this technical frenzy. After a brief demo of various tools of photoshop, there was a hands-on session.
The event was followed up by a competitive event for the participants comprising of a written prelims and the finals which asked the students to design a problem using Photoshop.
Mock Campus Test
SPEC Team took the initiative to familiarize the students with the upcoming campus placements. The event was organized in collaboration with NIIT Hamirpur. The event comprised of an aptitude test, a technical test and a group discussion judged by the experts from Sun Microsystems. This test not only tested the technical aptitude of the students but also hinted at their proficiency in communicating with the group and coming up with a common conclusion in group discussions. The whole event was a grand success as the students came forward in bulk to be a part of this event.
Visit To IIT Roorkee
Some members of SPEC Team went to participate in COGNIZANCE’09, the annual technical fest of IIT Roorkee held during 20th-22nd March, 2009. It was a very learning and exciting experience for all the members as it was the first such visit for most of our students. Students got the chance to participate in workshops, competitive events and guest lectures delivered by Nobel laureates.
